Dr. Seymour presents human factors awards at science fair

At the 48th Annual Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF), held March 20-24, 112 San Diego County schools contributed 767 exhibits. Three projects met additional criteria for science and human factors this year and were awarded by the San Diego Chapter of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES).

HFES San Diego Chapter President Dr. George Seymour, Collaborative Technologies (244210), presented a Certificate of Science Achievement to Sean Bettwy for his project, "Voice Stress Analysis. " Certificates were also given to Christopher Bonser for Statistical Analysis of Computer Based Learning Versus Traditional Learning" and Julia Mizrahi for "Auditory and Visual Short-Term Memory." In addition to the certificates, each student was given a check as further recognition of their accomplishments and dedication to the principles of science and human factors. Each student talked about his or her research project and then answered questions.

The GSDSEF mission is: "To maintain a continuous process that encourages and rewards professional excellence, promotes educational enrichment, and provides unique opportunities for independent achievement in science and technology for the thousands of seventh through twelfth grade students of all private, parochial, and public schools of the Greater San Diego Region."

In addition to the fair's awards, prominent local organizations such as the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, Association for Women in Science, Rubin H. Fleet Center, and Sigma Xi, hold their own judging events and individually recognize a few outstanding student projects. HFES has been judging awards at the GSDSEF annually since 1977. Levels of membership in the San Diego Chapter of the HFES are available by contacting Dr. Steve Holste, X39108.
